Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Can Have a Neck Component?

By Bellevue Chiropractor, Dr. Bob Cummins

Bellevue – Did you know that carpel tunnel syndrome, forearm pain, elbow dysfunction, and shoulder problems all share similar innervation from the cervical spine, aka, your neck?

Think of it this way, when your head isn’t on straight, all the things connected to your neck also don’t move straight.  Vertebral subluxations of the cervical spine alter joint alignment and motion.  This effects the transmission of nerve impulses from the cervical nerve roots that innervate everything from the shoulder to the fingers.  If nerve signals are not being transmitted efficiently from the neck, anything downstream from the nerve can develop problems.  In the medical world, this phenomena is called “Double Crush Syndrome”.  It frequently goes undiagnosed, especially with carpel tunnel syndrome, and sometimes can lead to unnecessary surgery in the hand.  After the carpel tunnel is surgically released, there is still carpel tunnel symptoms, pain in the wrist and hand.  The primary cause was not the carpel tunnel, but the neck.

Cervical subluxations cause degenerative joint disease, degenerative disc disease, and cervical radiculitis.  This often further leads to pain in the hand, elbow, and shoulder as well as radiating pain patterns from the upper trapezius, shoulder and down the arm and into the hand.  These symptoms are commonly associated with a history of upper back and neck pain and or stiffness, sometimes headaches, vertigo, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Keep your head on straight!  Help problems like carpal tunnel syndrome by keeping your neck and body in balance.  Cervical subluxations can be effectively managed by a chiropractor, and prevented by taking care of your spine and nervous system by living “The 100 Year Lifestyle”… great nutrition, effective strategies to handle stress, regular exercise that includes endurance and strength, and keeping your spine balanced on a periodic basis by a chiropractor.
