Re-Occurring Back Pain? Your Bellevue Chiropractor has the Answer!

By Bellevue Chiropractor, Dr. Bob Cummins

Bellevue – Do you have re-occurring back pain? If so, you may have a vertebral subluxation.  A  vertebral subluxation occurs when a vertebra and the supporting soft tissue around it do not move and or line up like they are supposed to.  This increases stress on the spine and over time causes it to wear out and cause pain.

Think of it like this, if one or more of your 33 back bones -(7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 lumbar), is not quite in line with the others and the nearby bone, muscle, ligament and tissue gets “kinked”, you may experience pain on a re-occurring basis.  Yes, like a “kink in your neck” or a “kink in your back”.  For what caused the kink and how to get unkinked…. read on.

What causes a subluxation?  Most often it’s some type of physical stress.  One of the most common is poor posture.  A great example is working on your lap top on the couch.  What’s wrong with this position?  It curves the lumbar spine into the exact position it likes least.  It takes out all of the lumbar lordosis and creates flexion.  This compresses the intervertebral discs and stretches the interspinous ligaments.  Given enough time, the deep stabilizing muscles around the spine become inhibited and fail to contract.  The vertebra lose their stability in this static lounging position, but then, continue to be unstable in standing, walking, and other basic movements.  If this routine occurs on a long enough basis, the discs will begin to bulge, the vertebral joint surfaces will become arthritic, and the spine will age at an accelerated rate predisposing the person to low back pain.  Don’t forget, nerves in the low back also coordinate organ function.  So, you also get to look forward to possible bowel, bladder, reproductive, and sexual dysfunction.

What to do about it?  Stop the poor posture habits.  Keep your spine fit.  Reduce inflammation with a vegetable based diet.  Incorporate habits to manage emotional/ mental stress.  Keep your body balanced by periodic chiropractic check ups. Then you can enjoy relief from your kinked backs or neck.
